Negative pressure intubation box integrates a virus containing enclosure made of acrylic connected to a virus filtration unit and negative suction. During intubation for ventilating the critical care COVID patients large quantities of virus-containing aerosols are released into the operation theatre since the breathing air path is wide open for intubation. Other aerosol-generating procedures are extubation, tracheostomy, oropharyngeal/tracheal aspiration, bronchoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, transesophageal echocardiography, defibrillation, chest compression, and a range of head, neck, and thoracic surgeries.

Why do operation theatres with COVID patients need Negative pressure Intubation box?
A typical operation theatre has two problems when it comes to COVID patients. One it’s built on positive pressure air cleaning technology which leaks contaminated air from inside the operation theatre to outside the hospital environment. Second HEPA filter based room air cleaning system with typical air changes of 15 per hour, is awfully inadequate to contain the locally emitted virus aerosol before infecting the hospital staff.
Viral concentration in a 300 sqft room with 600 CFM HEPA system with ACH(air changes per hour) 15 will take 16 minutes to fall below 99%, whereas Negative pressure Intubation box with ACH(air changes per hour) 900 will take 1 minute to remove 99% virus. Negative pressure Intubation box will also work equally well in COVID wards without an air cleaning system since it is a portable system.
