Negative pressure ICU bed canopy

Towards a safer world

Symptomatic COVID patients who don’t need critical ventilation are oxygenated with positive air pressure systems like CPAP, BPAP, HFNC (high flow nasal cannula). These positive air pressure systems spread COVID virus in exhaled air into the whole room increasing the viral load in ICU’s. Patients can also spread the virus through breath, sneeze and cough. Most ICU’s are positive pressure rooms leaking air outside contaminating the whole hospital. The solution to this problem is a negative pressure ICU or airborne infection isolation rooms (AIIRs), but they are awfully expensive and less in numbers in developing countries. A negative pressure ICU bed canopy would be a very inexpensive substitute for negative pressure ICU especially when pandemic overwhelms the existing ICU infrastructure.

Why do ICU’s with COVID patients need Negative pressure ICU bed canopy?

A typical ICU has two problems when it comes to COVID patients. One it’s built on positive pressure air cleaning technology which leaks contaminated air from inside the ICU to outside the hospital environment. Second reason being, HEPA filter based room air cleaning system with typical air changes of 15 per hour, is awfully inadequate to contain the locally emitted virus aerosol before infecting the hospital staff.

Whereas a negative pressure ICU bed with smaller enclosure area limits the spread of locally generated virus from spreading inside the ICU and leaking to outside, keeping the viral load outside ICU and inside ICU to the minimum possible.
Negative pressure ICU bed will also work equally well in COVID wards without an air cleaning system since it is a portable system.
